The function, mechanism, and influencing factors of silicone gaskets are to prevent the leakage of the sealed medium, and the forms of leakage can be divided into interface leakage and permeation leakage. The causes of interface leakage are usually due to the relaxation of the pressure between the sealing surfaces, aging, deformation, corrosion, wear or burning of the sealing surfaces, and mechanical vibration during operation. Penetration leakage is related to the material type, manufacturing method, properties of the sealed medium, as well as factors such as working pressure and temperature of the silicone sealing gasket.
In theory, even with the use of silicone sealing gaskets, it is impossible to achieve complete contact between sealing surfaces, without any microscopic channels or gaps. Although these channels are extremely small, their molecular volume relative to the fluid medium is still large enough. Therefore, it is impossible to completely stop the fluid at the edge of the sealed surface. There will always be some fluid entering between the sealing contact surfaces, and complex fluid mechanics and thermodynamics processes will occur in them. It is generally believed that after the fluid enters the extremely fine and irregular gaps between the sealing surfaces, resistance loss will occur during its flow process to consume its energy. At the same time, a stationary boundary layer will be generated on the walls of these gaps, making the small channels narrower or even completely blocked, preventing the fluid from continuing to flow into the sealing surface and achieving sealing.


The factors that affect the sealing of silicone gaskets mainly include the surface condition of the sealing surface, the contact width of the sealing surface, the properties of the fluid, the temperature of the fluid, the material of the silicone gasket, the pre tightening force applied on the sealing surface, and the influence of other external conditions (mainly system vibration, deformation of connectors, and installation position deviation). If the sealing is to be reliable, the above factors must be carefully considered, and the quality and selection of silicone gaskets are also crucial.
